HVO – A Cleaner Alternative to Diesel in Italy

Our impact regarding CO2-emissions as transport-industry is important. The world of fuels is changing, and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuel is one of the most promising alternatives to traditional Diesel. Derived from vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO is produced through a hydrogenation process that makes it similar to fossil diesel, but with a significantly lower environmental footprint. For this reason, our direction board and technical department decided with us in Italy to use HVO in Italy.

Various tests are showing that:

  • HVO consumption is probably slightly higher than traditional diesel, with an increase of between 1% and 5%. This increase is due to the lower density of biofuel compared to mineral diesel.
  • Exhaust emissions with HVO are reduced by 2% to 5%, which represents a significant improvement in terms of air pollution.
  • Thanks to the biofuel production process, HVO can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. This value depends also of the composition of the HVO-fuel, for example the percentage of the “ingredients” during production. Reduction occurs because the CO₂ was already absorbed during the growth of the plants used to produce the biofuel.
  • It’s possible to mix HVO with conventional Diesel to reduce CO2-emissions. Already a percentage of 26% of HVO could reduce emissions of about 20% round about.

As a result, HVO makes a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, helping us take tangible steps toward a more sustainable future. Reducing emissions is a crucial goal in the fight against climate change, and every improvement counts. By using HVO, we can lower the environmental impact of diesel engines while the transition to fully renewable or alternative energy sources continues. This solution represents an important intermediate step, combining practicality with sustainability. It also demonstrates how existing technologies can be adapted today to support a cleaner, greener tomorrow.

It is essential that both the fuel industry and vehicle manufacturers develop solutions in parallel to make this alternative fuel accessible to small and medium-sized transport companies. HVO needs to become more attractive and viable for them.
